office sat down with Cherman to talk about how Market plans to adapt to this change, his latest collaboration with Les Benjamins, and his crazy collection of 350 succulents.Ĭould you give me an overview of how you got into fashion and how you broke into the industry? After this name change, coupled with the decline of logo-mania and hypebeast culture, I spoke to Cherman about what this means for a brand that once thrived on limited release drops.Īs a fashion brand, you have to be adaptable to changes in pop culture and consumer taste to stay afloat. In 2021, after receiving necessary pushback from the Asian American community, the brand changed their name from Chinatown Market to simply Market. The brand has always valued accessibility over exclusivity, and has been widely available at retailers like Urban Outfitters and Zumiez since day one. From then on, Market grew enormously by selling hoodies, T-shirts, sweatpants, and graphic prints like its signature yellow smiley-face. Nevertheless, the idea for Market was born. The next day, Ocean’s legal team reached out with a cease and desist letter, and the party was over. After being terminated, Cherman debuted the Frank Ocean Swoosh shirt at ComplexCon – making $50,000 in sales in 24 hours. From the start, Cherman was getting into trouble in highschool selling t-shirts on campus, even earning the name “Mikey Merchandise.” After getting his start at a small jewelry shop called Goodwood in New York, Cherman quickly navigated his way through the fashion industry, meeting the right people at the right time, and eventually opening his own brand of reflective outerwear, ICNY.

I’d also like to call out an invaluable collaborator on this project: my research assistant Aviva Rubin. So, with that in mind, please scan, peruse, click, enjoy.įield Conditions installation view, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 2012 photo: Matthew Millman The great advantage of web-publishing - the possibility of immediate derailment, disorientation, or adventure down the rabbit hole. Suzanne asked me to publish this, incomplete and as-is, on Open Space, and in this age of attention deficit and information over-saturation, I was excited to re-imagine the essay format for the space of the web. Of course, neither can a singular essay devoted to the subject, although I did map out a semi-comprehensive 15-page outline as a beginning. The SFMOMA presentation, with 13 projects by 11 artists and architects, is of course limited by the physical factors of the gallery and as such cannot begin to be a complete and comprehensive analysis of the topic and theory that interests me here. As an exhibition, Field Conditions feels like the tip of the iceberg to me, a leaping-off point for further investigation and analysis on these intersections between art and architecture practice and the abstract concept of “space” as a subject. In an attempt to expand our general interpretation of architectural ideas, its focus is on an array of projects by both artists and architects that redefine the relationships between invisible and visible, figure and ground, finite and infinite. Can there be architecture without buildings? What if a wall or a floor went on forever? The works in our current show, Field Conditions, pose these questions and more about the construction, experience, and representation of space. The sinister mood does not prove strong enough by itself to compensate for a shortage of eventual action or resolution, our emotional under-involvement heightened by the “Night Pirate’s” alleged victims mostly being kept at an abstract remove. It plants too many red herrings while remaining stubbornly opaque about just what the threat here actually is, whether serial-killer-hacker or something otherworldly. Ben Lovett’s diverse original score encompasses both a giallo-type theme in a vintage Morricone mode and passages of trumpet-driven urban melancholy.īut all of this increasingly looks like smoke and mirrors as “Intrusion” goes on. There are amusing spoofs of mainstream TV programming, including a sci-fi sitcom called “Step-Bot.” The sunlight-deprived puzzle James lets himself get sucked into often takes place in literally subterranean places, adding to the atmospheric sense of a maze from which there may be no escape. The “intrusions” (credited as “designed by Daniel Martin”) have an unsettling otherness reminiscent of David Lynch’s early shorts. “Broadcast Signal Intrusion” (which despite a slight conceptual overlap is unconnected to “The Signal,” the excellent three-part thriller Gentry co-directed in 2007) is best in its first half, when the Borges-like story holds the most potential. The nature of that conspiracy remains a little too much of a mystery, with the fadeout simply obfuscating things further. He also gains a temporary collaborator in young transient Alice (Kelley Mack), though it’s one of many murky points in Phil Drinkwater and Tim Woodall’s script that we never figure out whether she or the sole other female character (played by Jennifer Jelsema) are actually connected to the central conspiracy or not. Woods), and additional figures played by Chris Sullivan, Richard Cotovsky and Justin Welborn. One of the first people he tracks down in this quest is a media studies professor (Steven Pringle), who has met his like before, and cautions him against “falling down a rabbit hole you can’t climb out of.” Nonetheless, James pushes on, despite this pursuit’s escalating negative impact on his employment, mental health and physical safety.Īmong fellow travelers met en route are a fellow retro-tech geek (Arif Yampolsky), a man apparently driven mad by this same wild goose chase (Michael B. James becomes obsessed with finding the supposed “Night Pirate” responsible for what another AV enthusiast calls the “creepiest unsolved mystery hack of all time” - particularly once he realizes they may be tied to the vanishing of several women, including Hannah. He realizes this was one of two, possibly three such bizarre “broadcast intrusions” since 1987, which were investigated by the FCC and FBI without their perp ever being identified. But one night a random news-program tape is interrupted by a strange figure speaking unintelligibly while wearing a plastic mask and wig, something very like the disturbing dreams he’s had of late. Now, his sole regular human interaction is attending a support group for other people grieving long-missing loved ones. It’s a solitary job that complements the loner lifestyle he had since his dancer wife Hannah disappeared three years ago. James (Shum) is an AV tech geek in 1999 Chicago, working the graveyard shift in a basement archive, logging old TV broadcast videos for posterity. The SXSW-premiering feature will be a viable item for home format sales theatrical prospects are slimmer. chasing down a possible link between the titular phenomenon and his wife’s disappearance. As long as the promise outweighs the frustrating lack of payoff, however, it’s an intriguing and atmospheric puzzle, with “Glee” star Harry Shum Jr. It’s tricky to pull off the kind of cryptic mystery labyrinth that “ Broadcast Signal Intrusion” attempts, and Jacob Gentry’s film only works to a point - whatever point at which the viewer decides this thriller’s elusive menace is just too vague to generate sufficient urgency or suspense. Mercury Records was the first to call him back. Through the mentor of his college roommate, Aron Wright, now a successful songwriter in Nashville, Lynch got a list of marketing contacts at Nashville record labels and began working the list. So at Lipscomb, when the marketing major needed an internship in his junior year, he knew he wanted it to be at a record label. He walked into a small record label in Murfreesboro called Sponge Bath Records and asked, “What do I need to do to work here?” They brought him on as an unpaid intern to pass out stickers at shows and other small tasks. “I realized pretty early, I was not going to be a rock star, but I really was interested in the music business… Whether I was working in this business or not, I would still be talking about music anyway.”Īs a teen, he took the initiative. It was a guitar riff in a rock song, and I just knew that was me. “I remember the first time I heard a song, it just grabbed me. “She saw that my candy store was the music store,” he said. Not bad for a guy who grew up on a farm in Fosterville, Tennessee, in Rutherford County, who says he can’t sing or play an instrument, but he did have a passion for discovering, listening to and talking about music.Įven in his childhood, “I consumed music at a rate that most people don’t,” said Lynch, describing how his Mom would send him off to Turtles Music in Murfreesboro for him to buy cassette tapes. Lynch’s department also coordinated publicity to promote Cody Johnson, who won his first CMA Award for Music Video of the Year and Single of the Year, and to promote McBryde, who won a Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance in February.įount Lynch with Dan + Shay's at their Bigger Houses album release event.Īll that and he coordinated publicity for the release of Dan + Shay’s fifth album, Bigger Houses, including the hit song “Save Me The Trouble.” 7 on Billboard’s year-end country chart and was the second-longest-running No. The popularity of Cole Swindell’s hit, “She Had Me at Heads Carolina,” an ode to Messina’s 1990’s super hit “Heads Carolina, Tails California,” led to a successful campaign by Lynch and his staff to book Messina and Swindell to sing a memorable duet of his song at November’s Country Music Awards (CMA). Even for a lifelong music publicity man, the months since his arrival at Warner have been a whirlwind, he said. It’s all just another day at the office for Lynch, who became Warner Music Nashville’s senior vice president of publicity in June 2022. “She is a believer, so we had the most spiritual conversation,” said Lynch, who described the moment as a thrill, even for a guy who spends his days promoting the careers of country artists such as Cole Swindell, Dan + Shay and Ashley McBryde. Messina, a beloved country star who had a string of hits in the 1990s and early 2000s, remembered the performance. Universal Music Group’s corporate headquarters are located in Hilversum, Netherlands and its operational headquarters are located in Santa Monica, California, USA.When Lipscomb alumnus Fount Lynch (BS ’03) had the opportunity to meet with country music star Jo Dee Messina to discuss her rejuvenated career in 2022, he took the opportunity to let her know that he saw her perform on Lipscomb’s campus, as an 18-year-old freshman in 1998. Writing for the website Film Music Institute, Adam DiTroia said "Kung Fu scores tend to fail when they try to hit every punch and kick, and Zimmer and Powell are smart enough to go for a cumulative wallop instead of going for every action move. What follows is largely orchestral, with bursts of tribal percussion and the occasional dance number." About the opening cue, "Hero", he called it "a wistful flute-led melody that sounds nearly identical to Howard Shore's " Hobbit" theme from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Music critic Jonathan Broxton wrote "The score is of the faux-Oriental variety, and makes use of a number of traditional (and increasingly) familiar local instruments, notably the erhu and the pipa, alongside a large-scale western symphony orchestra." James Christopher Monger of AllMusic mentioned that Zimmer and Powell "infuse the score with plenty of semi-traditional Asian motifs and instrumentation, resulting in an enjoyable - if entirely predictable - soundtrack that deals out clichés like candy on Halloween". The dominant voice is Zimmer's, but this is an album which should please fans of both composers." Both composers are well and truly within their comfort zones but sometimes that doesn't particularly matter, and this is one of those times. Reception į wrote "The score by Zimmer and Powell achieves everything necessary for the film, and as for its translation onto album, only the inconsistency of the comedy and actual fight material in the middle of the product, as well as the few moments of outward cross-cultural flair, restrain it from a fourth star." James Southall of Movie Wave wrote "Kung Fu Panda is good fun - a little silly at times, perhaps - but undemanding and enjoyable. American rapper-producer Timbaland also contributed to the soundtrack. In addition to Zimmer's score, a rewritten version of the classical song " Kung Fu Fighting" (1974) was performed by CeeLo Green and Jack Black, while the end credits version of the song is sung by Rain and Sam Concepcion, in the soundtrack marketing of the East Asian editions, and Mumiy Troll for the Russian edition. From both of them, we knew that it would be the perfect marriage because the film was a marriage of extremes." So, Hans gave us this huge, epic and beautiful dragon warrior theme, which is very emotional and very sweeping and John was the one who provided us with our very simple, very humble Po music. So, for us, it was a strong contrast between the two elements that were the most important to our storytelling, and we wanted them to explore that aspect. Osborne said, "We told them from the very beginning we wanted our film to be an intimate story about one character, but the backdrop was just epic, with a very formal and martial world. Stevenson attributed Zimmer and Powell had "both the ability to create lush musical landscapes", hence "there is a huge, majestic, epic quality to Hans’ music and John’s exciting and innovative ideas". John Stevenson and Mark Osborne did not want "to have a soundtrack that had contemporary pop songs in it", instead a traditional and orchestral score for a "big, epic film". Several Chinese instruments, such as erhu, guzheng, Chinese flutes and Baigong pipes were used in the score. Recording of the score was held at AIR Studios in London. In the process, he got to know about the Chinese National Symphony orchestra and brought them on their project, along with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Voices also performing. To score for the film, Zimmer visited China to absorb the culture and influence of traditional Chinese music. This marked Zimmer and Powell's third film working together, after Chill Factor (1999) and DreamWorks' The Road to El Dorado (2000). While Zimmer was intended to be the sole composer, his protégé John Powell was later brought into the project Powell's involvement was confirmed by CEO of DreamWorks Animation, Jeffrey Katzenberg, after the test screening of the film. Hans Zimmer was roped in as the composer for Kung Fu Panda, thereby making his sixth DreamWorks Animation film. The 17-track album was released by Interscope Records on June 3, 2008. As a process, the score was recorded with mostly Chinese traditional instruments, and the China National Symphony Orchestra also performed the score. The album consisted of traditional and orchestral score, infused with Chinese music, where Zimmer visited China to study the traditions and culture. The album features original score composed by Hans Zimmer and John Powell, and a cover of the classical song " Kung Fu Fighting" performed by CeeLo Green and Jack Black (who also plays Po, the lead character). Kung Fu Panda (Music from the Motion Picture) is the score album to the 2008 film Kung Fu Panda. Click on the one you want to insert it into your document.
